Statement of Intent
At Horfield we consider Art and Design to be a vital part of every child’s education and we aim for all our children to reach great heights in their creativity and skills whilst appreciating and understanding the creative world in which we live. We want our children to know more, understand more and remember more about Art and Design so they can express their ideas with increasing creativity and sophistication.
Implementation
Through our vibrant curriculum, effective teaching and clear progression of learning, children develop their understanding of the visual language of art, allowing them to flourish while producing creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences in their sketchbooks. These sketchbooks provide a personal space where each child can try out ideas and techniques, and describe and annotate their thoughts, learning, discoveries, opinions, strengths and areas for development.
A clear understanding of the visual elements of art and design – line, tone, texture, colour, pattern, shape and 3D form – is firmly rooted within a careful progression of knowledge through the strands of drawing, colour, sculpture, printing and textiles.
We aim to develop each child's cultural capital by referring both to classic artists, such as Antoni Gaudi or Leonardo Da Vinci, and to other practitioners from a wider variety of cultures and backgrounds – including those native to Bristol: we are keen for everyone to experience some of the amazing art and culture that our home city has to offer. Through studying a mix of local, classic and diverse art we want children to know that artists can come from any background while helping them understand that they could be the artists and designers of the future.
Our children will always be encouraged to think critically and to learn about the historical and cultural links of the finest examples of craft, design, architecture, textile art and sculpture so that what they find out can influence their own creations. Our aim is to provide an Art and Design curriculum that will enable every child to reach great heights while appreciating and understanding the vibrant and creative city we live in, and its place in the wider world.

Inspired by Louise Borden’s ‘The Little Ships of Dunkirk’, Year 5 explored different media to capture their ‘little heroic boats’. They developed their skills in watercolour, textural direct press print, oil pastel and mixed media collage using acetate and torn layers of tissue paper.
