PSHE
Statement of Intent
Our aim is that children develop with deeply rooted moral and spiritual core values. We want them to flourish together socially as they learn and grow in order to reach great heights as individuals. Children are taught relevant and meaningful content in PHSE lessons so that they are well equipped to play a positive role in contributing to our school and to the wider community.
At Horfield we want children to know more, understand more and remember more PSHE. We believe that PSHE is an essential part of the curriculum that allows us to teach information and skills to empower children to learn now, and improve their life-chances later. Through the teaching and learning of ‘The Jigsaw Approach to PSHE’ we feel that the children at Horfield will have opportunities to develop their self-feelings, thoughts and ideas using a range of concepts that will allow to build on their social skills, emotional skills in a mindful and spiritual way. We inspire the children to ask questions about themselves and the world around them, we endeavour to give children the life skills that they need to continue on in life after education and become a valuable member of society. We will introduce new vocabulary to the children that we will encourage them to use within lessons to build on their knowledge and understanding of PSHE. We will continue to promote equality and inclusion for all of our children and these will be topics that will be discussed and taught as part a broad and balanced curriculum.
Jigsaw holds children at its heart, and its cohesive vision helps children understand and value how they fit into and contribute to the world. With strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health, Jigsaw properly equips schools to deliver engaging and relevant PSHE within a whole-school approach. Jigsaw lessons also include mindfulness allowing children to advance their emotional awareness, concentration, focus and self-regulation. In Reception, PSE is a prime area of learning and so is taught and supported through daily adult-child interactions during child-initiated time and taught sessions. Jigsaw further supports this through explicit teaching.
Implementation
Our school values of Generosity, Compassion, Courage, Perseverance, Respect and Forgiveness are woven through the heart of our PHSE lessons. Lessons are taught on a weekly basis following the Jigsaw Scheme and end points are clearly identified.
PSHE is taught in a weekly basis across the school from the Early Years to Year 6 and we follow the Jigsaw scheme. Jigsaw PSHE aims for children to grow and develop their understanding of issues related to mental wellbeing, physical health and fitness, healthy eating, Internet safety and awareness and first aid.
