Physical Education

Statement of Intention

Our intention is to inspire all children to find enjoyment in sport and physical activity, not only in school, but as part of everyday life. We hope that children will find a physical activity that they enjoy taking part in either as part of a team or individually and that this will encourage them to live healthy, active lives. We want children to know more, understand more and remember more about physical education so they see how important it is both for now and for their future health.

Through PE lessons we want children to develop their health and fitness levels, with a clear understanding of the impact of exercise on their physical and mental wellbeing. We want children to flourish in their PE by using knowledge, creativity and imagination when playing games or creating sequences in gymnastics and dance. With fitness, creativity and skill, children will reach great heights by developing transferable positive attitudes and values alongside an appreciation of physical exercise in all forms.  For some children, the PE they learn in school will provide the spark needed to embark on a long term interest in sport, gymnastics, dance or general physical fitness.

At Horfield we want all children to be given the opportunity to develop their confidence in PE and to see themselves as successful, we recognise that some children have a natural flair for PE and we are keen to celebrate this however we also want children to understand that everyone is capable of success no matter what challenges they may face. At Horfield we use Get Set 4 PE as our scheme of work as this has a strong focus on inclusivity and celebrating success for all.

We are committed to ensuring children access swimming lessons from the earliest stages as we believe that the ability to swim is a life skill that everyone should have. From Year 1 upwards children attend swimming lessons at our local Leisure Centre where they are taught by specialist swimming coaches. Utilising this local resource helps children to recognise that a high quality facility is on their doorstep and develop their confidence in the water.

Our School’s PE and Sport Provision

In April 2013 the Government announced new funding of £150 million for physical education and sport. This funding was to be used by schools to improve the quality and breadth of PE and sport provision so that all pupils develop healthy lifestyles and reach the performance levels of which they are capable.

At our school we spend our allocation of additional funding to employ an excellent specialist PE teacher, Ruth Ruck, to work alongside teachers from Reception to Year 6 in their PE lessons. Through this professional development our expectation is that this will increase teachers’ subject knowledge and confidence when teaching PE.

Implementation

PE lessons at Horfield provide children with opportunities to become physically confident in a range of situations and to develop their health and fitness. Competitive sports and other activities build children’s character and help to embed our key values of courage, respect, perseverance, generosity, forgiveness and compassion. There is also a strong emphasis on fairness and team-work.

We follow the Get Set 4 PE scheme of work for our PE lessons, we employ specialist sports coaches from SHINE and we also employ our own PE specialist who works alongside the teachers to develop their skills in teaching PE. If you would like to know more about Get Set 4 PE follow the link to their website: www.getset4pe.co.ukAt Horfield PE is organised into the strands of Fundamental Movement, Games, Body Management, Dance, Swimming and SET (Social, Emotional and Thinking).

In Key Stage 1, children are taught a range of fundamental movement skills, so that they gain competence and confidence. Agility, balance and coordination are taught and the children engage in competitive (both against self and against others) and co-operative physical activities, in a range of increasingly challenging situations.

In Key Stage 2, children apply and develop a broader range of skills, learning how to use them in different ways and to link them to make actions and sequences of movement. Children communicate, collaborate and compete with each other in attacking and defending games and striking games. They develop an understanding of how to improve their performance and how to evaluate and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best.

We also have a range of equipment available at lunchtime and SHINE coaches run games or activities which are focused on developing children's physical fitness.
